TEMPORARY UN/AVAILABILITY

2021

Temporary Un/Availability
Mala Gallery of Mystetskyi Arsenal
September 25 - October 23

From September 25, the Laboratory of Contemporary Art Mala Gallery of Mystetskyi Arsenal will start a joint exhibition of residents of the international program Temporary Un/Availability. Ukrainian-Austrian Art Residency 2021, organized by Mystetskyi Arsenal and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Kyiv in cooperation with the Department of Culture and Arts of the Government of Lower Austria. The project aims at strengthening the international connection between Ukrainian and Austrian artists and supporting them.

Ten artists from Austria and Ukraine took part in the two-month residency. The program took place in a hybrid format — online and offline. The participants formed five tandems. In the dialogue, they worked on the creation of multimedia projects on the topic of place and its un/availability due to the global epidemic situation.

Participants:

Hubert Lobnig — Kateryna Berlova

Christina Werner — Anna Scherbyna;

Christoph Höschele — Leo Trotsenko;

Iris Andraschek — Mark Chehodaiev;

Eva-Maria Raab — Lena Siyatovska.

The work of Kateryna Berlova and Hubert Lobnig is related in different ways. Therefore decided not to collaborate in one work but to continue with their own practice and build their exhibition work on the impossibility / inabillity of a real dialogue.

Kateryna Berlova works with public space and half public / pivate spaces and mostly

interacts or acts into it through  her body, installations / interventions and personal memorys. For the exhibition she shot a video where she is walking in a very fashionable and fine dress in selected sites of Kiew with flowers scraping along the ground, taping the strange sound of it.

Hubert Lobnig is collecting situations in and views in public space in Kyiv. He looks for Passage Situations like the round gangway in the hotel with different fittecarpets, escalators or stairs down to the underground. He is interested in passages like this one of Orpheos, who passed the door to the underworld. He works with video in Hotel Saliut and around its Public Space. His Body becomes only visible by operating the camera.

Mentors of the residency: Alexandra Tryanova, Bohdan Shumylovych.

The exhibition will last until October 23

in Mala Gallery of Mystetskyi Arsenal.

This exhibition arose from an experiment, from an attempt to keep the dialogue between the artists going even if there is a pandemic outbreak. Temporary Un/Availability is a project about the idea that our invisible borders are flowing and soon we will be able to meet and work as usual, although we understand that "as always"  will no longer be.

 We have sought to explore and rethink the concepts of place and memory, in the absence of physical access to places, but such things are easier to conceptualize than to do while residing in virtual capsules. We talked a lot about creativity in the digital transformation, about aesthetics and ecology, we imagined places and thought about spaces. The artistic tandems were formed as the result of joint trip, which ended in Kiev. And although the main goal of the project was a dialogue between artists, this exhibition is also the result of the dialogue. The exhibition about places, space, and temporary unavailability.

The exhibition Temporary Un/Availability takes place within the Ukrainian-Austrian Art Residency 2021, organized by Mystetskyi Arsenal and Austrian Cultural Forum in Kyiv in cooperation with the Department of Culture and Arts of the Government of Lower Austria. The project is implemented by the Laboratory of Contemporary Art Mala Gallery of Mystetski Arsenal and aims to strengthen international relations between Ukrainian and Austrian artists and provide them with support.
