"FOR YOUR EYES ONLY" BETWEEN COMFORT AND ANXIETY

IRIS ANDRASCHEK HUBERT LOBNIG WOLFGANG REICHMANN

Curator: Monika Schwärzler

Artists tend to look at the world with a more penetrating vision and in the process force us to reevaluate our environment. A function of the '1: homes K. Lang Gallery in the Graduate and Professional Development Center is to create a place for this type of confrontation.

One of the strengths of the "For Your Eyes Only" photography exhibition curated by Dr. Monika Schwärzler is that the artists formulated their concept for the exhibition after exploring the environment where it would be placed. The title of the exhibition refers to the Webster community.

Hubert Lobnig, who is interested in interior rooms and the story they can tell about the occupants of the space, decided to create a walled alcove within the student lounge. He felt that the open space did not offer privacy for those who wanted to read, relax, or avoid the curiosity of casual visitors. Instead of decorating the interior of the wall and using the exterior to conceal the interior in a traditional manner, he arranged a collage of his photographs and of photos taken from publications on the exterior side of the wall where they can be viewed as one walks down the hall. He turned the inside out.

His images are domestic, but hidden within them is a suggestion of evil. Within the collage you can find a photo of the Unibomber's apartment. There are other disturbing aspects to the collage. Closer inspection reveals out of scale objects superimposed on normal domestic clutter. The fact that our world can be threatening is a theme reflected in the work of each of the three artists.

The interior of the alcove tends to resemble a cozy living room. The fiberboard is left unpainted and is both ugly and color coordinated in the best interior design sense with the over-stuffed furniture. On the wall Wolfgang Reichmann has hung his "Kid Gun Series", X-ray photographs of children's toys which have been manipulated to create quite beautiful but deadly images. One can appreciate the elegantly designed objects and also feel anxiety about the fact that children can play with symbols of destruction. There is an allusion to an evil which can captivate.

"This Photo was made/found and exibited by: Your Name could appear here"
